I am a product designer, game designer, and producer, turned author. I was born and raised in Rochester, New York, but I’ve lived in New England for forty years. I’ve been a curious consumer of life through art, travel, and a career in entertainment. I’m in awe of the beauty, diversity, and complexity
of the physical world we live in, and I’m now at the age where I’m contemplating what we’re doing to it. For me, writing is a meditation, a contemplation tool, a Chataquaua of the mind. Storytelling is a powerful art that can focus issues, ideas, and emotions, allowing not only the author but also readers, to see, consider, or feel things in their own lives—things that they may have never thought about or accounted for.

Into The DAX

Into The Dax is a dystopian novel set 200 years in the future in North America. It’s a thriller where science, nature, and religion collide. The story follows Kiley Van, a bio scientist hunted by a theocratic regime called the Elect. She finds refuge with an Earth-revering people called the Dax in the Adirondack mountains of what was once New York State. There, she is immersed in ancient wisdom that science has yet to divine. But the Elect catch up with her, and she finds herself in the middle of a conflict larger than herself. One that will decide the future for all living things. At a higher level, the story is about belief systems—whether spiritual, religious, or scientific—and how these beliefs become our lens on the world, shaping the way we treat other people and the Earth itself.

 

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?

I am casting about for audiobook voices and/or an audiobook tool to use, and in-between compiling notes for a prequel and a sequel, I’m ripping up areas of my lawn and planting wildflowers for pollinators—and how could I forget my new job, marketing Into The Dax.
 

WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE DON’T GENERALLY KNOW ABOUT
YOU? 

I designed and voiced the original handheld electronic hit game, Bop It. I
was also the executive producer of international video game hits RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Civilization Conquests, among many other games. You can see more of my game career on my website. bobwelchauthor.com.I also walked around an entire country in one day. Can you guess which one it was?
 

WHAT IS A FAVORITE LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE
BUSINESS OF WRITING?

That the business of writing is not my favorite. :)   A big lesson I’ve learned is that writing and publishing a book may be the easy part. Finding an audience is a whole new skill set to learn. You have to find your needles in the haystacks.

 
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU GIVE TO NEW AUTHORS?

Don’t sit at your desk too long. Write until you know what’s going to happen next, then stop. The next morning when you get up, you’ll be loaded and ready to write. It’s a good way to avoid writer's block. I picked up this technique from reading a book by Earnest Hemingway called The Garden of Eden. 
Be persistent. Find an editor you can work with. Stay true to your own writing voice. Write what you know. Whether you think it’s interesting or not, your own life is full of incredible moments. Mine them, and because you lived them, those visceral moments and memories will come alive on the page.

Knee status.

Now that I am 7 weeks (53 days) post surgery, I am getting back into my normal routine. Coffee, writing, projects, working out, going for walks, reading, and watching scifi.

The very last thing for me to get back to normal is riding my bike. It has been recommended that I wait until the 100 day mark to risk the mountain bike. 47 days to go...

Back to work...

Status

Sorry for the delays.

In two weeks I get my knee replaced. Pain and drugs to stop the pain have kept me from being productive. Hemingway said, "write drunk, edit sober." I tried. I seem to doze off. 

Pain keeping me awake at night is the worse part.

Anyway. This summer you'll have something new... I hope.

New Monkey Wrench

Well it's time...

...for a new Monkey Wrench...

I am now scheduled for a knee replacement on March 31st, 2026. Joy.

I am trying to get this next novel to my editor by then but it is not looking likely. 

I mean I could send it, but it is not up to snuff yet. Every time I go in and fix one thing I notice another thing, or have an idea for another thing. It also doesn't help that my knee won't allow me to be comfortable at my desk without changing positions every five minutes. 

My wife is being extra super awesome taking care of me. She remembers how well I took care of her for her last three major repairs. (Hip, shoulder, other hip) I can still drive, because it's my left knee. But damn.

 Good news is I met with my surgeon today. There will be robots involved. I was also fitted for a brace to get me to the 31st, and I got a handicapped parking permit.

--Now if only someone could go get the mail.
